Men's Counselling
When it comes to counselling male clients, I have created a successful, effective “balls to the wall” counselling approach. I use my coined “velvet-glove approach” — a therapist who appears gentle but is as tough as nails underneath.
I’ve found that this unique and tested approach usually puts men at ease and makes them feel comfortable to bring forth stuck times in their lives.
Getting stuck often prevents them from being the best they want to be — even if they have survived ‘just fine’ since then.
My toolbox: Straight to the point. I insist, persist, I coax, I dispute, and I prod in a conversational style with the male clients for the “screw yous” that experience with counselling men has shown me that can be what is lurking deep hidden in the caverns of their big hearts.
My signature no-nonsense style comes with humor, wit, care and compassion. I make no apologies for my sometimes choice of salty words.
I’ve even been called the “Howard Stern of counselling” — I say things as they are!
A mentor of mine, professional speaker and prolific author, Bill O’Hanlon, once said that “One of Barbara’s strengths is her authentic outrageousness and her willingness to be herself. As a therapist, she’s got something different.”
I find men very quickly start to become ready for change and say things like….
“Man, I really didn’t want to come today. But now I know what this is going to be like, I can see I definitely need help. You get me. I was so worried I would have to deal with some ‘touchy-feely’ counselling crap.”
“If I knew it was really going to be like this I would have done it sooner"
Men come through my counselling door to get tools to be their best selves—“I don’t want to be that guy”.
Time and time again over the 15 years of experience working with men, they leave my counselling sessions they don’t sound, act, or even look like the guy who first stepped through my door.
I’m totally accessible; I answer my own phone so I can talk to a male client who might be hesitant about counselling. I answer any questions you may have before booking a session.
Call me—it will be me that answers. Let’s have a virtual video chat. Interview me and let both see if it’s a good fit.
If you want to get out of living life in your head and out of your own way…..
